Spacebar Counter

Click the box, pick a length and press Space as fast as you can. The timer starts on your first press. Switch to Free count to tally presses with no timer.

This test needs a physical keyboard. On a phone or tablet, try the CPS test instead.

How the spacebar counter works

The counter adds one every time you press the Space bar while the box has focus. In the timed test, the clock starts on your first press, so your reaction time is not part of the score. When time is up, you see the total presses and the presses per second, which is the total divided by the length of the test.

Free count has no timer. It simply keeps a running tally until you press Reset or Esc, which is handy if you just want to count presses.

Why holding Space does not count

If you hold a key down, your computer starts repeating it after a short delay. A counter that counted those repeats would let anyone reach a huge number by leaning on the key. Browsers mark repeated key presses, and this counter skips them, so only separate presses count.

Key presses sent by a script or extension are marked differently from real ones. The counter still shows them, but a run that includes them is never saved as your best.

Tips for a higher score

  • Pick the right length. Use 5 or 10 seconds for your top speed and 30 or 60 seconds to test how long you can keep it up.
  • Stay relaxed. A tense hand tires quickly. Short, light presses are faster than hard ones.
  • Try both thumbs. Some people press faster by alternating their thumbs on the bar.
  • Know your keyboard. Some keyboards ignore extremely fast repeated presses of the same key to filter out switch bounce, which can cap your score.

Can an auto clicker press Space?

Not ours. Simple Auto Clicker only clicks: it repeats left clicks on an element you pick, or wherever the mouse rests, at any interval from 50 ms. It does not press keys. If you want to measure clicking instead, the CPS test counts clicks per second and has a mode for testing auto clickers.

Need repeated clicks instead?

Simple Auto Clicker is a free Chrome extension. It clicks a picked element or the cursor position at any interval from 50 ms, one loop per tab.

Spacebar counter FAQ

Does holding the space bar count?

No. When you hold a key down, your computer repeats it automatically, and the browser marks those repeats. The counter skips them, so only separate presses add to your score.

What is a good spacebar score?

There is no official scale. Scores change a lot with the test length and the keyboard, so the fairest comparison is your own best at the same length. The counter saves your best for each length.

Are my scores saved anywhere?

Only your best score for each test length, stored in your own browser. Nothing is sent to a server, and clearing site data removes it.

Why does the page not scroll when I press Space?

Space normally scrolls a web page down. While the counter box is focused, the tool stops that so you can press freely. Click outside the box and Space scrolls again.

Does it work on a phone or tablet?

It needs a physical keyboard. On a phone or tablet without one, use the CPS test, which counts taps.
